Tamil is a Dravidian language spoken in southern India, primarily in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is also an official language in Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Tamil is also considered one of the longest-surviving classical languages of the world. The earliest epigraphic records of Tamil date to the 3rd century BCE.

It is written with an abugida, with 12 vowels (uyireuttu, soul-letters) and 18 consonants (meyyeuttu, body-letters).
